Gerard Musgrave - otherwise known as Bassman Gerry - is a composer, writer, and producer. He was born in the United Kingdom, but left the UK at the age of six with his parents who returned to Dominica in the West Indies. Gerry lived there for all of his school years and he feels that growing up in Dominica was a very good experience for him, “Natural nature and the beauty of Dominica is one to be remembered always, but it's only after you leave spending many years in another country that you realize how wonderful the place you left is”. This is one reason why he always returns to the family and friends he has back in Dominica. During his years there he lived in different parts of the countryside, such as Calibishie in the north of Dominica and Bagatelle in the south, until eventually settling in the capital Roseau where his parents still lived.

Due to financial circumstances he could not afford either music lessons or a guitar. September 1980, he returned to the UK, yet it was another three years before he was able to buy a Fender bass guitar, a bass guitar book and teach himself to play bass guitar.

In 1983, with fellow reggae fan and drummer Vincent McFarlane, Gerr y decided to form a band, naming themselves ‘Creation Roots'. Gerr y was the main contact for the band taking on all the management duties alongside his role as the bass player. Creation Roots quickly became a popular band and performed at a lot of shows both locally and nationally such as carnivals and festivals where they supported various artists and reggae stars. Among the many names supported were Luciano, Aswad, Alton Ellis, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Black Slate, Johnny Orlando, Macca B, Barrington Levi, Cutty Ranks, soul diva Ruby Turner as well as the band New Model Army (a rock band). They performed live on the ‘Out of Our Heads' music programme filmed for BBC2 and also ‘Wax On Wheels', Ruby Wax's show for channel 4 TV.

Creation Roots has split-up now due to negative vibes. As a rastaman negitave vibes is not a part of my life don't want that kind of thing in my music at all.

In the past and at present he has also produced music for local artists who have needed support. He formed a band called ‘Sudden Klymax' in 1989. This was a Soul, Reggae, Dance, Zouk and Calypso band. They too became a popular band with a big local following performing at festivals, parties, and charity events.

Bassman Gerry has put together a solo album titled ‘Freedom', which he composed, produced and sang himself. He has also produced and mixed an instrumental reggae album entitled ‘Full Moon', again composed, arranged and written by himself. On his solo vocal album, ‘Freedom' there are three versions of the ‘Freedom' song. A reggae, a garage and a rock version. This has given local musicians a chance to rework some of Bassman Gerry's music, spreading his positive music further.

“The album will be of positive vibrations, reality vibes roots reggae. This is Bassman Gerry as a solo artist sharing de inspiration that the most high Jah has blessed him with and his contribution to reggae music. Maximum respect to all DJ's, radio station's and to all reggae lovers all over the world.”

Favorite artist's include the late great Bob Marley, The Wailers, Third World, Burning Spear, Steel Pulse, Luchino, Morgan Heritage, Sizzla, Beris Hammond and many more, in fact to many to mention. The album will be released on his own record label which is called ‘Bassman Gerry'. Gerry's ambition is to write and produce good songs with a positive message in the hope that they will reach people all over the world and make them feel good.
